Project Overview

Context

According to the National Library of Medicine, an individual child’s developmental level is a critical factor in determining whether the medium will have positive or negative effects. It is critical that society has valid information of where these effects come from. As many studies have only looked at the impact of television on society, particularly on children and adolescents. From lots of research it has been determined that there are multiple perspectives of scholarly conversation on the negative effects of television, which is where my research will continue to add to.

Gap

According to the California Department of Education children are most influenced in the middle childhood stage in one’s life. Which is why the coding for specific character traits within these shows were chosen for adolescents  between the ages 5-8. Children's TV shows have not been explored for the specific character traits that lead to unusual behavior in children. That is why the focus of this project is to find the exact effects TV has on children in the most influential stage of development, based on personality traits portrayed in the most popular shows. In order to add new knowledge to the scholarly conversation the specific traits need to be brought out to explain this gap of the negative effects of media for children.

Process

My project has made huge jumps from November to February, as I was able to randomize ten episodes from each show (listed below), and begin conducting research. As of right now my methodology has consisted of using the Personalized Personality Model, I made back in November from personality traits taught to Elementary school students. Using this I have kept a spreadsheet tracking the traits seen throughout the watching process, along with the time stamp from the show. From there the traits become color coded based on positive, neutral, and negative. This allows me to be able to see the overall influence each episode has based on the traits portrayed.

Above is picture of two coded episodes, from Paw Patrol, taken directly from my data sheet. The colors represent the coding of positive (red), neutral (green), and negative (pink). Then next to the exact trait, is the timestamp of when exactly in the episode each trait occured.

So far in my process, I have gotten through half of my shows, which all include ten episodes. I am still in the research conduction, but I am projected to finish by the last week of February. From there I will then be moving on to my analysis portion, raping up my findings, and coming to an overall conclusion. This will then allow me to begin my final presentation to present to the College Board. After that it will be crunch time to finish my final research paper, and then eventually submit.  Having this be my overall timeline, there were many things that had to be pushed back due to unexpected roadblocks. The biggest being Wifi.

Unfortunately trying to conduct research at the school was not as easy for my project. The school's Wifi has multiple blocks on websites including all streaming platforms needed to watch shows. So we began trying to work with the district to get these sites unblocked from 7:40am-9:10am, being the time span of class. This was a longer process than expected, so until we were able to get the district to comply, I began downloading my episodes ahead of time, to watch in class without Wifi. The time spent trying to work around the Wifi set my project back, about 2 weeks. My projection for post research analysis went from the first week of February to the last. Instead of trying to fit all shows into a short amount of time, I decided to change my overall timeline to work around my set backs. This way I was able to ensure credible, reliable results rather than a rushed conclusion.
